Like Riding a Bicycle

Published by under Animals,Birds,Sarah

Sarah dusted off her bicycle for the first ride of the season. Here is one of our resident turkeys.  Soon we should have lots of poults (that is farm talk for baby turkeys). On Sunday, Sarah went for a trail ride in Walden N.Y. with her friend Michaela (not pictured).

Ready for Takeoff

Published by under Animals,Birds,Sarah

We returned from a long absence (okay, two weekends) to find many signs of spring. At school, Sarah just finished a segment called “Wild Northeast,” in which each student selected a northeastern animal or plant (only two kids picked plants) and wrote a little book about it.  Sarah chose the Northern Spring Peeper (seen here and […]

Snow Bunny

Published by under Animals,Sarah

We had enough snow on the ground so that Sarah could try out her snowshoes, which were a Christmas present last year. She and her mom made a snowman. While they were doing that, I found this horseshoe sticking out of the ground.  It looks very old. Here’s the completed snowman, with a jaunty birds’ […]

We had clammy weather at the farm this weekend. Sarah stayed indoors and made origami frogs.

Sheep & Wool

Published by under Animals,Sarah,Trees

The trees were in high color this weekend. Even the squirrels got into the swing of things. On Saturday, we visited the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds, where we saw a sheep herding exhibition. The sheepdogs were impressively well trained, but, frankly, so were the sheep. Sarah took […]

Stormy Weather

Published by under Animals,Sarah,Trees

Storm clouds threatened today, but we didn’t get much rain.  We managed to squeeze in a walk. It’s always easier if you can keep the pebbles out of your boot. Sarah stuck with it, and found a friend. The sunshine makes everything look better.

Labor Day 2012

Do we relax on Labor Day?  Why, noooo – we do lots of yard work.  But we are not the only ones who keep busy. This highly energetic squirrel gathered two hickory nuts simultaneously. And this frog made a home in Sarah’s rosebush. But it was not all toil.  Jen’s dad came to visit, and […]

Dutchess County Fair 2012

Published by under Animals,Food,Sarah

Sarah seemed to have a tolerably good time at the Dutchess County Fair this year.  We missed the fair last year because of a hurricane, but Sarah nevertheless won a blue ribbon.  This year, Sarah went twice, on Friday and Saturday. There were no ribbons for us this year, blue or otherwise.  Jen’s blackberry jam […]

July 4, 2012

Published by under Animals,Food,Sarah

We had a hot and happy Independence Day at the farm.  Here, Jen goes off to gather lettuce for a July 4 salad.  Later we climbed Burger Hill to watch fireworks from the towns near the Hudson River. Sarah read about a book a day. It’s berry season.  We do not appear to have a […]

Squirrels Destroyed My Ukulele

We arrived at the farm for our Christmas vacation and found a deranged squirrel in the family room, hopping from bookshelf to bookshelf.  In the process, he knocked my ukulele to the ground, destroying it.  The squirrel had gotten in through the chimney in the mud room.  We chased him out the front door. Other […]
