Buzz Off

Sarah snacked moodily on heirloom tomatoes before we departed from the farm this evening. We have a new — and vibrant — beehive in one of the maples in front of the cottage.  You can hear it buzzing from some distance away.  We consulted Ray Tousey, who sells honey at the Rhinebeck Farmers’ Market.  He said […]

Memorial Day 2012

Published by under Flowers,Sarah,Trees

By virtue of her membership in the Rhinebeck Soccer League, Sarah marched today in the Memorial Day parade.  She spent most of the time collecting candy thrown from parade floats and fire engines. At the parade, Jen took this picture of William Sanchez, the town judge, who married us in 2000. Everyone enjoyed the long […]

Fish Stories

On Saturday, Sarah had some friends over after soccer practice.  We went fishing after lunch.  Here is Sophie catching the afternoon’s only fish — a largemouth bass. In bloom: Bleeding Hearts Columbine Dogwood Also on Saturday, we (and by “we” I mean Chuck) installed the 12-unit purple martin house that Julie gave us.  Although some bluebirds […]

Up Up and Away

Spare parts arrived for the remote-controlled helicopter (my x-mas gift from Jen’s mother), so we put it back together and took it for a spin.  Sarah was skeptical that it would fly — but it did.  Although, once again, I sent it into a tree.  No harm done. On Saturday it was 61 degrees, which would […]

Squirrels Destroyed My Ukulele

We arrived at the farm for our Christmas vacation and found a deranged squirrel in the family room, hopping from bookshelf to bookshelf.  In the process, he knocked my ukulele to the ground, destroying it.  The squirrel had gotten in through the chimney in the mud room.  We chased him out the front door. Other […]

Get Cracking

Published by under Food,Trees

At our current billing rates this is about four thousand dollars worth of shelled hickory nuts — about enough for a pie.  We are all looking forward to Thanksgiving!

Think Pink

Here is today’s sunset, which I noticed while on a conference call and slipped outside to photograph.  Fortunately, the cordless phone has pretty good range.

In the Evening

Published by under Trees

From Saturday evening, here’s another example of the beautiful light that makes everything look like a J.F. Cropsey painting. When we woke up this morning, there was frost on the high grass.  We returned to New York early to watch the marathon.
