Social Distancing

Published by under Birds,Pond

After a long hiatus we have spent the last week here at the farm — and indeed we are stuck here indefinitely — as a result of COVID-19. We have all been strongly encouraged to “work” from “home” and I am doing my best to comply. Still there are encouraging signs of spring all around, […]

Mighty Phragmites

Published by under Pond

With Jen away in Concord, Massachusetts, for board meetings, Sarah and I sprinted up to Rhinebeck Friday night after Sarah’s evening dance lessons. Icy

Published by under Pond

If it remains as cold as it was this weekend, and it doesn’t snow, we’ll have a rare chance to skate on the pond next weekend. In the meantime, we kept warm on Saturday with lasagna (veggie) and movie (Little Miss Sunshine) night.

Mighty Phragmite

Published by under Pond

The phragmites surrounding the pond are in perfect health as they prepare for winter. We seem to be bypassing autumn entirely: on Saturday we could see ice forming on the pond.  We put the garden to bed, installed storm windows, stacked firewood, and generally tried to be as ready as the phragmites.
